White phalaenopsis orchids, every broad petal worked in fine waffle stitch, every throat finished with a burst of marigold gold. Calla lilies furled tight around their own yellow centres. Lily of the valley on arched stems, ivory bells hanging beside them, and small white blossoms set with a pearl. Through it all run long strappy leaves, one pale variegated sage leaf, curling tendrils and chartreuse pompom buds on fine stems. Behind everything sit sprigs of oxblood so dark they read almost black.
It is the most restrained bouquet we make and, for that reason, the one people notice first. Almost all of it is white. The oxblood is the only depth in the arrangement, and it is what stops the white from turning bridal and makes it read sharp instead. The orchid carries the rest of the meaning on its own: rare, deliberate, slow to open and long to last. Worked in yarn, it stops being seasonal altogether.
